San Martino del Vescovo (Saint Martin of the Bishop), Florence

Saint Martin of the Bishop offers a compact yet layered glimpse into the city’s religious and social history. Documented as early as 986, the church is among Florence’s oldest places of worship, likely founded or supported by the Bishop of Fiesole. Over time, the site evolved from a parish church into the seat of a unique charitable institution, while retaining its quiet presence just steps from the city’s busier streets.

The oratory became closely associated with the Buonomini, a lay confraternity established in 1442 by Antonino Pierozzi and supported by Cosimo de’ Medici. Their mission focused on assisting the “shamed poor,” those who had fallen into hardship but avoided public charity. This discreet form of aid continues today, with members still meeting weekly to manage their work in private.

Inside, the oratory preserves a remarkable cycle of frescoes attributed to Domenico Ghirlandaio, illustrating acts of mercy carried out by the confraternity. Painted in the late 15th century, these scenes depict members of the Buonomini distributing aid—delivering food, providing dowries, visiting the sick, and offering quiet support to those in need. Rather than idealized figures, Ghirlandaio presents carefully observed details of daily Florentine life, from clothing and interiors to gestures of compassion, giving the scenes a striking sense of realism. The compositions are clear and narrative-driven, guiding the viewer from one act of charity to another while reinforcing the confraternity’s mission.

Additional artworks in the church include scenes from the life of Saint Martin, an altarpiece by Niccolò Soggi, and a sculpted bust linked to Andrea del Verrocchio, who was the teacher of Leonardo da Vinci. The site also carries a more personal historical note: it is traditionally believed to be the place where the great Italian poet Dante married his wife, Gemma Donati.
