Sankt Johannes Kyrka (Saint John's Church), Malmo

Saint John's Church in Malmö is a striking example of the Jugend style, also known as Art Nouveau, designed by the renowned architect Axel Anderberg. Located near Triangeln in the Innerstaden district, the church was built between 1903 and 1907, reflecting the era’s architectural transition. The initial plans for the church, drawn up in 1901, were intended to relieve the pressure on Saint Peter's and Saint Paul's parishes due to rapid population growth in Malmö. Construction began in 1903 with a target completion of 1906, the year when Saint John's Parish was officially founded. However, delays meant that services were first held in Saint Paul's Church, and it was not until 1 June 1907, on Holy Trinity Day, that the church was finally inaugurated by Bishop Gottfrid Billing.

Architecturally, Saint John's Church stands out from the prevalent neo-Gothic structures of the time, embracing the soft, rounded forms characteristic of Art Nouveau. Built in red brick on a sturdy granite foundation, the church’s roof features enamel tiling, and its ornaments incorporate around 20 different types of natural stone, making it visually rich in detail. One of the more unique elements is the placement of the tower on the north side of the church, adjacent to the sanctuary, which breaks with the traditional westward orientation of church towers.

Inside, the oak pulpit features five intricately carved panels by sculptor Carl Andersson, depicting key moments from the life of Jesus, including His birth, baptism, and resurrection. These carvings, along with the church's overall design, reflect the National Romantic spirit and the emerging Art Nouveau movement in Sweden at the time.
