Victoriateatern (Victoria Theatre), Malmo

Victoriateatern (Victoria Theatre), Malmo

The Victoria Theatre (Victoriateatern), founded in 1912, is a historic performance venue in the heart of Malmö. Originally designed by architect Axel Stenberg in the Art Nouveau style, it was one of the city’s most elegant cinemas, complete with unique features like massive aquariums flanking the proscenium. Over the years, the theatre has evolved from a prestigious cinema to a multi-purpose cultural hub, now offering a vibrant mix of performances, ranging from concerts and theatre to film screenings and stand-up comedy.

The theatre’s unique atmosphere is enhanced by its practice of “picnic seats,” where audience members are encouraged to bring their food and drinks to enjoy during performances. With a current seating capacity of 190, split between the orchestra and balcony, it creates an intimate setting that amplifies the magic of live performances.

In its early days, the Victoria Theatre was home to silent films, accompanied by a small orchestra in its original orchestra pit. After a brief stint as a variety theatre in the 1940s, it returned to its cinematic roots until its closure in 1974. Threatened with demolition, the venue was saved by passionate advocates and was subsequently restored and reopened as a multifunctional cultural center.

Today, Victoria Theatre hosts a diverse range of events that cater to all ages and tastes, from jazz, blues, and pop to classical music, world genres, and local acts. The theatre’s blend of history and modern versatility makes it a cherished landmark, preserving its cultural significance while continuing to attract an ever-growing audience.
