Sankt Peter (St. Peter's Church), Aachen
Sankt Peter (St. Peter's Church) is one of the oldest parish churches in the area, first documented in 1215. At that time, a small chapel dedicated to Saint Peter was built on top of a former Roman burial site. The medieval building later fell into poor condition and was mostly demolished in the early 18th century. A new church was completed in 1717, reflecting the needs of a growing parish at that time.
The present structure is mainly Baroque and built of brick. It was designed by master builder Laurenz Mefferdatis and shows clear, solid forms rather than medieval Gothic features. The church tower is older and is believed to have been part of the former city walls, giving it both religious and practical importance as a visible marker in the area. During the Second World War, the church was heavily damaged. It burned out completely in July 1943, and further destruction followed in April 1944.
After the war, the church was rebuilt by 1951, followed by a major interior redesign in 1974 and 1975. The interior is simple and shaped by postwar changes rather than historic decoration. Alongside church services, parts of the building are used for social work, including Caritas programs and the Café Plattform, which offers affordable meals and support.
