Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe), Guadalajara

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a majestic 18th-century Catholic church dedicated to the patroness of Mexico. Commissioned by Bishop Antonio Alcalde, its construction began in January 1777 and culminated in 1781. The exterior showcases a fusion of churrigueresque and neoclassical design, built from golden cantera stone sourced from nearby Huentitán.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a richly adorned interior boasting five naves separated by 36 granite columns, vaulted ceilings, and an impressive dome. The highlight is the main altar, crafted by José de Alcíbar in 1779, which features a revered painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe crowned in gold, surrounded by 28 detailed oil paintings and ornate gilded altars. The dimly lit ambiance is enhanced by stunning murals and marble accents.

More than an architectural gem, the shrine has long been a vital social and spiritual anchor. Bishop Alcalde also established a housing program nearby for the underserved. Today, the church holds regular masses and welcomes pilgrims, especially around December 12th, the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
