Templo de Nuestra Senora del Refugio (Our Lady of Refuge Church), Guadalajara
The Church of Our Lady of Refuge is a remarkable neo-Gothic landmark completed in 1900. Its orange façade, elegant pointed arches, rose window, and slender stone tower stand in bold contrast with the surrounding urban transit routes.
Step inside and experience the church’s atmospheric beauty: vaulted ceilings, finely carved pillars, oil paintings, statues, sculptures, and a richly gilded metal altar centering on the image of the Virgin of the Refuge, painted in 1889.
What makes this church particularly unique is its survival amid Guadalajara’s rapid urban development. When Avenida Federalismo was widened in the 1970s and the Metro Line 1 was later constructed, the church was preserved at the center of the boulevard rather than demolished-earning it the affectionate local nickname “the church in the boulevard”.
