Shola Market, Addis Ababa

Shola Market (also written Sholla) is a large local market where people shop for everyday needs. It is often seen as easier to walk through than Merkato, though it is still busy and lively. The market is mostly open-air, with narrow paths and tightly packed stalls rather than formal shops.

Clothing is one of the main reasons people come here. Stalls sell traditional Ethiopian clothes as well as modern items like jackets, sportswear, shoes, bags, and suitcases. Some products are locally made, while others are imported. Prices depend on quality, and bargaining is normal and expected.

The market also sells handicrafts and food items. Visitors can find woven baskets such as mesob, pottery, simple jewelry, and household tools. Food stalls offer spices, coffee beans, grains, vegetables, and other cooking basics. The ground can be uneven and muddy after rain, so walking can be slow. Spending about 30 to 45 minutes is usually enough to see how people shop and trade in this part of the city.
