Small Staircase in Kalemegdan Park, Belgrade
The Small Staircase, situated at one of the entrances to Kalemegdan Park in downtown Belgrade, is a significant element of the park's architecture. It forms an essential part of the park's walkway overlooking the Sava River. As part of the Belgrade Fortress complex, it holds cultural and historical importance and enjoys state protection as a Cultural Monument of Exceptional Importance.
Located at the southernmost end of Kalemegdan's portion within Great Kalemegdan Park, near the junction of Pariska Street, it links the Sava Promenade of the park with Pariska Street and the urban area of Belgrade. Opposite the staircase stands the imposing French Embassy building, with the Cathedral Church, the Patriarchate Building, and King Petar I Elementary School nearby.
Constructed in 1903 from the design of Jelisaveta Načić, Serbia's first female architect, the staircase reflects the academic style with a predominant influence of neo-Baroque aesthetics. It features bifurcated arched staircases merging into a central platform, from which one ramp extends towards the Sava Promenade. The façade facing Pariska Street is adorned with a lion-shaped drinking fountain within an arched niche, embellished with shallow pilasters. The railing, characterized by shallow pilasters, adds to the decorative appeal. Constructed primarily from stone, the staircase contributes to the ornamental charm of Great Kalemegdan Park, reminiscent of late 19th and early 20th-century European city parks, embodying the essence of the fin de siècle era.
