Sokoji Temple, San Francisco

Sokoji Temple, located in San Francisco, has a rich history that reflects the resilience and dedication of its community. The temple's origins can be traced back to 1934 when it was founded and dedicated on December 8th, a significant date in Buddhism known as Jodoe, which commemorates Buddha's attaining enlightenment.

During World War II in 1942, Sokoji closed temporarily due to the internment of Japanese Americans. In 1948, after the war, it reopened with Reverend Rien Takahashi leading the way, thanks to the community's dedication and perseverance.

In 1984, Sokoji underwent another significant transformation as it was relocated to its current address on Laguna Street. The relocation was a significant undertaking, taking four years of construction, but it reflects the strong sense of identity and belonging that the temple holds within the Japanese American community in San Francisco.
