St. Andrew's Church, Nottingham

Saint Andrew’s Church is a Grade II* listed Victorian Gothic Revival church in Nottingham, built between 1869 and 1871 by architect William Knight as a daughter church to Saint Ann’s. Standing at the crown of the former Gallows Hill-once part of Sherwood Forest and long associated with public executions-the church now dominates the landscape opposite the Rock Cemetery and serves the community near Mapperley Park.

Constructed with Bulwell stone and Ancaster dressings, the church’s cruciform layout features a 150-foot tower and spire, stained glass by Heaton, Butler, and Bayne, and a historic organ with 18th-century pipework. The site was purchased for just over £500 in 1868, and with support from figures like Colonel Robert Holden and lace magnate Thomas Adams, the building was completed in 1871. Reverend Henry Tebbutt, who led the project, became the first vicar.

Over the years, the church expanded with the addition of a baptistery in 1884, a vestry in 1905, and a Lady Chapel in 1931-many elements funded by local benefactors such as the Player and Mellers families. The associated vicarage and parish school were constructed in the same Gothic style, and Saint Andrew’s also became home to Nottingham’s first Boys’ Brigade, founded in 1888.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Saint Andrew’s adapted to changing needs. A modern church house opened in 1938, and in 2000 the Jericho Road Project-supporting women in the nearby red-light district-was launched from the church. Between 1992 and 2013, Vicar Richard Clark oversaw major interior updates, including new seating and underfloor heating.

In 2023, Saint Andrew’s merged with Trinity Church Nottingham, an HTB (Holy Trinity Brompton) network plant, under the leadership of Revd Jonny Hughes. Now part of a renewed mission presence in the city, the church continues to balance its historic legacy with contemporary community outreach.

In 1068 Norman invaders built a wooden motte-and-bailey fortress on a high sandstone promontory....  view more
