St. George's Church, Salisbury

St. George's Church is a historic parish church serving the village of Harnham, just south of the medieval centre. The building dates mainly from the 12th and 13th centuries, with an early record from 1115. Built from flint and limestone rubble, it reflects centuries of change and remains an active parish church.

Inside, visitors can see medieval stonework, pointed arches, historic memorials, and early 20th-century stained glass by local Arts and Crafts artist Eleanor Warre, who also created the painted altar panels and embroidered altar frontals. One unusual feature is the medieval squint in the Trinity Chapel wall, traditionally linked to excluded worshippers. Above the chancel arch, a rare 13th-century Noli me tangere painting survives, partly cut by later alterations.

The churchyard, with its old gravestones and mature trees, provides a quiet place to pause. The square tower holds two bells, including one cast in 1692, while records show two bells have been present since at least 1553. Close to the River Avon and local walking routes, the church offers a clear view of Harnham’s long parish history.
