The Rifles Museum, Salisbury

The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum preserves the military history of the Berkshire and Wiltshire regiments, whose origins date back to the 18th century. Uniforms, medals, weapons, photographs, and personal items tell the stories of local soldiers across centuries of conflict. The collections also explain how these historic county regiments eventually became part of The Rifles.

The museum is housed in The Wardrobe, a Grade II* listed building with origins dating to 1254. Originally used to store the ceremonial robes and belongings of the Bishops of Salisbury, it was largely rebuilt during the 15th century and later adapted for other purposes before becoming a museum. Visitors can see medieval stonework and timber interiors while exploring the military collections.

Exhibits include campaign memorabilia, regimental silver, paintings, diaries, and interactive displays that explain the daily lives of soldiers and the development of military equipment. Temporary exhibitions add further insight into soldiers' lives and changing military service.
