St. Louis Public Library, Saint Louis

The St. Louis Public Library is one of the oldest public library systems in the Midwest, with its Central Library serving as its main public branch and architectural centerpiece. The current building opened in 1912 and was designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert, who also designed the United States Supreme Court Building. Constructed with support from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the library was created to provide free access to books, knowledge, and educational resources.

Following an extensive restoration completed in 2012, the historic building combines its original architectural character with modern library facilities. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style with strong Italian Renaissance Revival influences, the Central Library features marble staircases, carved woodwork, bronze fixtures, stained-glass skylights, and spacious reading rooms restored to their early 20th-century appearance. The ornate ceiling of the Great Hall incorporates design elements inspired by Michelangelo's Laurentian Library in Florence. The library's collections include millions of books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and historical documents, together with digital resources, exhibitions, and special collections highlighting local and national history. Rotating displays and public art further enhance the visitor experience.

Beyond its collections, the St. Louis Public Library serves as a cultural and educational center, hosting author talks, exhibitions, concerts, workshops, film screenings, and community programs throughout the year. Guided tours introduce visitors to the building's architecture and history, while modern spaces support research, learning, and public events.
