Centenary United Methodist Church, Saint Louis

Centenary United Methodist Church is one of the oldest Methodist congregations in the region, tracing its origins to 1839. Designed in the Gothic Revival style by architect Thomas Dixon, the historic sanctuary was completed in 1869. A large educational and office wing was later added to the complex in 1924. The church has remained in its downtown setting for more than 150 years, continuing its role as both a place of worship and a center for community outreach.

The exterior is defined by stone walls, pointed arches, tall stained-glass windows, and a prominent tower that reflects traditional Gothic forms. Inside, the sanctuary features a high ceiling, carved woodwork, decorative stone details, and stained glass that adds color to the worship space. The 1924 addition provides classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, and other spaces used for education, administration, and community programs.In addition to regular services, the church hosts concerts, lectures, charitable initiatives, and cultural events. Its music ministry includes choir performances and seasonal programs, while outreach efforts support local residents through food assistance, educational activities, and partnerships with community organizations.

The building's long history, architectural features, and continued public role reflect the congregation's decision to remain active in the downtown area as the surrounding neighborhood changed.
