St. Louis Zoo, Saint Louis

St. Louis Zoo, Saint Louis (must see)

The St. Louis Zoo is one of the leading zoological parks in the United States and is known for offering free general admission, a tradition supported by a public tax district approved by local voters. Its origins trace back to the 1904 World's Fair, when the Flight Cage remained in Forest Park and became the foundation of the zoo, which was officially established in 1910. Today, the zoo covers approximately 90 acres and is home to more than 12,000 animals representing around 500 species.

It is widely recognized for its work in wildlife conservation, scientific research, and breeding programs for endangered animals. The zoo is divided into six themed zones that recreate habitats from around the world. Visitors can explore River's Edge, home to elephants, rhinos, hippos, and cheetahs; journey through The Wild to see bears and great apes; or visit Penguin & Puffin Coast, one of the largest penguin exhibits in North America. Other major areas include Red Rocks, Historic Hill, Lakeside Crossing, and Discovery Corner, which features the Insectarium and the interactive Henry A. Jubel Foundation Destination Discovery family area. Educational exhibits, animal demonstrations, and seasonal presentations provide opportunities to learn about wildlife and conservation throughout the visit.

Beyond its animal exhibits, the St. Louis Zoo is an active center for education and conservation. It supports international field research, participates in breeding programs through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and offers educational classes, summer camps, guided programs, and special events throughout the year. Combining naturalistic habitats, diverse wildlife, and a long-standing commitment to conservation, the zoo provides visitors of all ages with an engaging introduction to the world's animal life.
