The Grand Basin, Saint Louis

The Grand Basin is one of the central landscape features of Forest Park, created for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, commonly known as the World's Fair. Designed as part of the fair's grand ceremonial grounds, the basin served as a reflecting pool framed by monumental exhibition buildings and landscaped promenades.

Although most of the fair structures were temporary, the basin remains a lasting reminder of the event, preserving the grand ceremonial scale and central axis of one of the largest international exhibitions held in the United States. Today, the Grand Basin is surrounded by several of the park's best-known cultural institutions and open green spaces. Its broad waters reflect nearby buildings, fountains, bridges, and rows of mature trees, creating one of the park's most recognizable views. Walking paths circle the shoreline, while benches and lawns provide places to relax or enjoy picnics. Ducks, geese, turtles, and other wildlife are commonly seen around the water, adding to the peaceful atmosphere throughout the year.
