St. Martin's Church, Salisbury

St. Martin’s Church is the oldest active parish church in the area, with parts of the building dating from the early 13th century. Built mainly of flint and stone, it developed over several phases, including a 13th-century chancel, a 14th-century tower and spire, and a 15th-century nave. Fragments of carved limestone, believed to have come from the dismantled cathedral at Old Sarum, can still be seen in the medieval fabric.

Inside, the church reflects both medieval craftsmanship and later Victorian restoration. Its Anglo-Catholic tradition, shaped by the 19th-century Oxford Movement, is visible in the rich interior, especially the carved rood screen with figures of church leaders and saints. Stained glass, memorials, timber roofs, and historic stonework add to the sense of continuity within an active parish church.

St. Martin’s also has an important link with Bishop Richard Poore, rector here from 1198 to 1215, who later helped lead the move from Old Sarum and the creation of the cathedral. Designated Grade I listed in 1952, the church remains a valuable place for visitors interested in medieval architecture, local history, and worship traditions.
