St. Paschalis Baylon, Hague

St. Paschalis Baylon, Hague

The Saint Paschal Baylon Church, located in The Hague, is a prominent religious edifice with a rich history and notable architectural features. Built between 1919 and 1921, this church is dedicated to the Spanish saint Paschalis Baylon and serves as an excellent representation of traditionalist architectural style, as envisioned by its architect, A.J. Kropholler.

The church is characterized by its extensive use of brick, with only a few natural stone elements incorporated into the structure. The church complex also includes a few houses designed by the same architect, contributing to a cohesive architectural presence in the vicinity.

Situated within a nearly square walled site, the church is positioned diagonally, with its entrance on the west corner at the intersection of Neuhuyskade and Wassenaarseweg. The choir of the church is located on the east side, following the traditional orientation of Christian places of worship. The church's tower, which is prominently positioned on the corner of Jozef Israelsplein, makes it a dominant landmark in the surrounding neighborhood.

The interior of the church is designed to ensure that the priest and the altar are clearly visible to all attendees. As a result, the nave is notably wide, in stark contrast to the narrow and dimly lit aisles. The northern aisle leads to the pulpit, while the southern aisle leads to a side altar dedicated to Saint Paschalis Baylon, featuring a retable with a painting by Lodewijk Schelfhout.

Additionally, the Saint Paschal Baylon Church features numerous artworks and religious elements, including a relief by Lambertus Zijl above the entrance, a pulpit, baptismal font, stations of the cross, and a communion rail by the Brom brothers, as well as statues by Jacques and Johanna Sprenkels. The church's pews, furniture, and chandeliers were also designed by the architect, creating a harmonious interior that complements the architecture.
