Louis Couperus Museum, Hague

Louis Couperus Museum, Hague

The Louis Couperus Museum, nestled in the Archipelbuurt neighbourhood of The Hague, serves as a cultural beacon dedicated to the celebrated Dutch novelist and poet Louis Couperus. Established in 1996 by Caroline de Westenholz, the stepdaughter of Albert Vogel Junior, a renowned biographer of Couperus, the museum is strategically situated within the same area Couperus once inhabited.

This museum occupies the ground floor of a nineteenth-century townhouse in Archipelbuurt, a district that vividly features in many of Couperus's novels. Couperus had a personal connection to this neighbourhood, having spent his boyhood at Nassauplein and penned his first novel, "Eline Vere," just a stone's throw away at Surinamestraat. Emphasizing this connection, a bronze bust of Couperus since 1963 proudly adorns the square in front of the museum.

The museum's collection boasts an array of Couperus's personal effects, including manuscripts, letters, and his desk. These items, along with a portrait of his father, John Ricus Couperus, create an intimate portrait of the writer's life and work. The museum also houses a life-sized mannequin of Couperus and his collected publications, adding to the immersive experience.

Twice annually, the museum curates exhibitions centered on themes related to Couperus's life and work, offering fresh insights into his literary legacy. Beyond its walls, the museum extends its cultural outreach through guided walking tours, tracing the footsteps of Couperus and the fictional characters from his novels across significant locations in The Hague.

The Louis Couperus Museum offers visitors an extensive insight into the life and works of a highly regarded author from the Belle Époque era.
