St. Paul's Cathedral, San Diego
Saint Paul's Cathedral, situated in the Bankers Hill neighborhood of San Diego, is an Episcopal church serving as the official seat of the bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego.
The parish originated from the first Protestant congregation in San Diego, founded in 1853. It later became Holy Trinity Parish. In 1887, it was renamed Saint Paul's. Due to the congregation's growth, a new campus, including a significant church, was designed by architect Philip Frohman in 1919, across from Balboa Park.
Saint Paul's was intended to be San Diego's future cathedral, separate from the Los Angeles Diocese. The Great Hall was completed in 1929, but the church building faced delays due to the Great Depression. Construction began in 1950, and the first service was held in 1951, though the building wasn't fully finished. Additional features, like a chapel and an office wing, were later added. In 1973, the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego was established, and Saint Paul's became its cathedral in 1985.
The cathedral serves as the residence for a vibrant and expanding community of Episcopal/Anglican parishioners. Embracing the name "the Cathedral 4 the City," Saint Paul's articulates its purpose as "bringing together the ancient rhythms of liturgy and sacred music set to a progressive beat that thoughtfully engages the critical issues of social justice facing our world".
The church has an impressive music program led by Martin Green, the Canon for Music. It includes three choirs: the adult choir performs at the 10:30 Sunday Eucharist, the Cathedral Choristers, and Saint Cecilia's Choir alternate leading the weekly Evensong service. The cathedral hosts public concerts and has a large music library.
