St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church, Pittsburgh

St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church, Pittsburgh

Saint Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church, nestled in the vibrant Strip District of Pittsburgh, is an architectural gem that epitomizes the grandeur of the "Polish Cathedral" style. This style is renowned for its opulence, Old World elegance, and a harmonious blend of architectural influences. The church, also known to locals as the 21st and Smallman Street Church, showcases a unique combination of Romanesque, Baroque, and Byzantine elements, creating an aesthetically rich and spiritually uplifting space.

The construction of the current building commenced in April 1891 and reached its completion with a consecration ceremony on July 31, 1892. This remarkable structure is a one-story brick edifice that spans an area of 8,337 square feet (774.5 square meters), notable for its construction directly on the ground surface without a basement. It features twin towers that house a collection of seven bells, adding to its majestic silhouette against the Pittsburgh skyline.

One of the church's most distinguished features is its stained glass figure windows, crafted with exceptional skill by the Royal Bavarian Art Institute in Munich, Germany. Experts regard these windows as among the finest examples of "Munich Style" stained glass in the United States, celebrated for their intricate design and vibrant colors.

The interior of Saint Stanislaus Kostka has evolved over the years, especially in terms of its mural decorations. The current paintings adorning the semi-dome over the altar were executed by Italian artist Vincent Scatena. These murals, completed in 1925 for the parish's Golden Jubilee, add a layer of artistic and spiritual depth to the church's interior, contributing to the overall aura of sanctity and beauty that envelops visitors and worshippers alike.
