State Academic Drama Theater, Yekaterinburg

State Academic Drama Theater, Yekaterinburg (must see)

The Sverdlovsk State Academic Drama Theater was founded in 1930 and opened its first season on October 2 with The Break by Boris Lavrenyov. It was created as part of a wider Soviet effort to develop culture in industrial regions. From the beginning, the troupe focused on serious drama and literary adaptations, shaping a stable acting style and professional school.

In 1977, the theater received Academic status, confirming its long work in developing dramatic art and professional actor training. In 1980, it was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for its contribution to Soviet cultural life. These distinctions marked the theater as one of the leading drama institutions in the region. Over the years, many well-known actors and directors have worked here, helping to shape a stable ensemble. The theater is especially known for performances built on collective acting, where the interaction between performers is more important than individual star roles.

The building has a solid, straightforward appearance with simple lines and little decoration, typical of late Soviet public architecture. Inside, the auditorium is designed for clear views and good acoustics, which suits spoken drama. The interiors use calm colors and soft lighting. Foyers and staircases are wide and practical, allowing audiences to move comfortably before and after performances.

The repertoire includes Russian classics, modern plays, and new interpretations of familiar texts. Works by Chekhov, Ostrovsky, Gogol, and Shakespeare appear regularly, alongside plays by contemporary Russian and international writers. The theater also takes part in festivals, tours to other cities, and runs educational programs. These include talks, workshops, and performances aimed at younger viewers, helping new audiences become familiar with dramatic theater.
