State Academic Musical Comedy Theater, Yekaterinburg (must see)

The State Academic Musical Comedy Theater has operated since 1933 and is closely connected with the development of musical theater in the Ural region. It was founded when operetta and musical comedy were promoted as accessible stage genres. From the start, performances combined music, dance, and spoken dialogue with strong ensemble work. In 1986, the theater received Academic status in recognition of its artistic contribution.

The repertoire covers classical operettas, Soviet musical comedies, modern musicals, and shows for children and families. Along with works by Johann Strauss, Imre Kálmán, and Isaak Dunayevsky, the theater develops original Russian musicals focused on literary, historical, and social themes. The theater has received the Golden Mask several times, recognizing both performance quality and innovation.

The building follows a Neoclassical style shaped by major reconstructions in the 1930s and in 1962. Its symmetrical façade and formal entrance reflect its public role. Inside, the theater has several performance spaces, including a large Main Stage and a smaller experimental hall, often called the Small or Crystal Hall. This layout supports both large productions and more intimate performances, with auditoriums designed for clear acoustics and good visibility.

Visitors can choose from evening performances, children’s matinees, chamber shows on the smaller stage, and seasonal programs. The foyer is often used for small exhibitions linked to current productions. Backstage talks, educational events, and occasional open rehearsals offer insight into rehearsals, stage work, and musical preparation.
