Stephanskirche (Saint Stephen Church), Bamberg
Saint Stephen Church has a rich history. According to legend, it was funded by Saint Kunigunde, as depicted in the relief on the imperial tomb. The original church, consecrated in 1020 by Pope Benedict VIII, no longer exists. The oldest remaining part is the 13th-century tower. Construction of a new church began in 1626 but was interrupted by the Thirty Years' War.
It was later resumed in 1677 by Antonio Petrini. The church features a remarkable west wing facade, a transept, and a choir that together form an equal cross. The crossing displays a stucco relief depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, created in 1688 by Johann Jakob Vogel.
In 1808, after being secularized and stripped of some furnishings, the church was made available to the evangelical community. The interior underwent a renovation in 1987, resulting in a uniform white finish that enhances the effect of light and space. In 1986, artist Jürgen Goerz added the central altar, baptismal font, and ambo to the church.
