Taborkirche (Tabor Church), Leipzig

The Tabor Church is a prominent Protestant place of worship located in the Leipzig district of Kleinzschocher. It is distinct as the only church in Leipzig with a double-tower façade, making it easily recognizable in the cityscape. The church is situated on Tanzberg, a hill that was once an old Slavic cult site, near the former Kleinzschocher manor, which was destroyed during the Second World War.

Constructed between 1902 and 1904, the Tabor Church was built as a replacement for the old village church of Kleinzschocher, a modest choir tower church that once stood in front of the current site. The design of the church, a three-aisled Romanesque basilica without a transept, came from Arwed Roßbach, a city planning officer who passed away the year the foundation stone was laid. Architect Richard Lucht oversaw the construction, and the church was consecrated on March 13, 1904. The old village church was demolished in 1905.

Architecturally, the church is designed in the neo-Romanesque style. Its two south-facing towers, each 52 meters high, can be seen from afar, and are a defining feature of the church's profile. The main entrance is set in the south gable, flanked by two smaller side portals. In the 1990s, the roof of the nave was renewed, and since 2008, the church's towers have been illuminated at night by spotlights. Extensive renovations of the east tower, including the façade, tower sphere, and weathercock, took place in 2017, with copper sheeting replacing the previous aluminum plates.

Inside, the church's Romanesque style is complemented by richly decorated sandstone furnishings, including columns, the altar, and a baptismal font, as well as intricate woodwork on the patronal pews, lectern, and benches. The church also houses a colored coat of arms belonging to the Tauchnitz family, who owned Kleinzschocher Castle from 1848. Additionally, the epitaph of Gebhard von Dieskau, dating back to 1683, was preserved from the old village church.

The church also boasts a vibrant musical life with a choir of around 80 members, a trombone choir, and a singing school for primary school children.
