Teatre Romea (Romea Theatre), Barcelona

Originally established in 1863 as Teatre Català, this was initially a private theatre with a primary focus on showcasing plays in the Catalan language. Its aim was to engage the popular classes and the petty bourgeoisie of Barcelona, making it a vital cultural space for Catalan expression. From 1939 to 1945, however, no plays were performed in Catalan due to historical circumstances.

The theatre underwent a name change to Teatre Romea as a tribute to Julián Romea Yangüas, a distinguished actor and writer from Murcia during the 19th century. Throughout its history, the establishment has welcomed generations of Catalan actors, solidifying its position as a center for contemporary artistic endeavors that boldly embrace innovative and entertaining productions, renowned for their thought-provoking nature and ability to captivate audiences.
