Teatro Cánovas (Canovas Theater), Malaga
Nestled on El Ejido hill in Malaga’s Centro district, the Canovas Theater has been a cornerstone of the city’s cultural scene since its inauguration in 1991. Managed by the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions since 2005, the theater serves as a hub for multidisciplinary arts, offering a diverse array of programming that caters to audiences of all ages.
The theater boasts 370 seats, complemented by the smaller Room B, which adds an intimate 50-seat capacity, and the Sala Gades, a space with 234 seats located within the Higher and Professional Conservatory of Dance. Together, these venues form a dynamic cultural complex under the Junta of Andalusia’s Department of Culture and Sports.
In 2008, the addition of Sala Gades expanded the theater’s offerings, particularly in the realm of dance. Since the 2013-2014 season, the Canovas Theater has taken a fresh approach by focusing on programming for children and young people. Highlights include cycles dedicated to theater, dance, music, circus, and flamenco, as well as the Thespis Project, which integrates performances with post-show discussions designed to foster critical thinking in students. Collaboration with the Filmoteca de Andalucía since the 2021-2022 season has added weekly film screenings to the venue’s repertoire.
With annual programs such as the Cycle of Theater and Dance, Pop Rock Cycle, Cycle of Contemporary Music, Cycle Flamenco Viene del Sur, and the Festival of Puppets, Object, and Visual Theater, the Canovas Theater remains a vibrant cultural hub in Malaga, offering something for everyone.
