Temple of Isis, Pompei

The Temple of Isis is one of Pompeii’s most intriguing religious monuments, located behind the Large Theater. Although small, it is unusual because it was dedicated to Isis, an Egyptian goddess worshipped as a universal mother figure and associated with protection, rebirth, and benevolence. Her cult spread widely through Roman communities, especially in places like Pompeii, which had strong trade links with Egypt. The temple was one of the first buildings uncovered during excavations in 1764, and an inscription found the following year helped reveal its identity.

Originally built in the late 2nd century BC, the temple was badly damaged by the earthquake of 62 AD and was fully rebuilt before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The reconstruction was funded from the personal fortune of a freed slave, which puts the cult’s popularity among slaves, servants, freed people, and the working classes of Pompeii into perspective.

The temple was built in a Hellenic style, with a central podium reached by steps and a cella where sacred statues of the goddess were kept. The site is also notable for the unusual objects found during excavation, including a marble hand, bronze candlesticks, and a human skull, possibly connected with cult rituals.
