The Synagogue, Cesky Krumlov

The Synagogue, Cesky Krumlov

Built in 1909, the Synagogue is considered a shining example of Art Nouveau architecture in Český Krumlov. Its design features elegant and intricate details characteristic of this artistic movement. While primarily Art Nouveau, the building also incorporates elements of Neo-Romanesque architecture, adding to its architectural richness and uniqueness.

For its first three decades, the Synagogue served as a place of worship and gathering for the local Jewish community in Český Krumlov. However, in 1938, the Synagogue's fate took a significant turn when it came under occupation during the Sudetenland crisis. After World War II, the building underwent various transformations. It briefly served as a place of prayer for the U.S. Army soldiers stationed in the area and later found use by Evangelical Churches. Over time, the Synagogue transitioned into a storage facility as its original purpose faded into history.

Following the post-war period, the Synagogue eventually became the property of the town of Český Krumlov. In 1990, it was returned to the Jewish community. In the late 1990s, the Egon Schiele Foundation undertook the initial restoration efforts to save this historical site.

Today, the revitalized Synagogue continues to play a significant role in the community. It has been given a new lease on life, serving as a meeting place and a multifunctional space for culture, art, and social gatherings.
