Torre Cuscatlan (Cuscatlan Tower), San Salvador

Torre Cuscatlan (Cuscatlan Tower), San Salvador

Standing tall amidst the skyline the Cuscatlán Tower-is a prominent office skyscraper completed in 1989, designed by acclaimed Salvadoran architect Ricardo Jiménez Castillo. At 79 meters with 19 floors, it held the title of the tallest building in El Salvador until 2009 and remains one of the tallest structures in the country today.

The tower’s design reflects modern architectural principles, notably its full glass façade paired with structural elements of reinforced concrete and aluminum. A standout feature is the trio of setbacks ascending the structure, each adorned with vertical greenery.

Originally named Democracy Tower, reflecting its symbolic link to the democratic process, the building endured damage during the Civil War, when Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front fighters shattered much of its glass. Over the years, it has cycled through notable names: from Citi Tower during Citibank’s ownership back to Cuscatlán Tower after its reacquisition in 2016 by Grupo Terra.
