Torres de Quart (Quart Towers), Valencia

Torres de Quart (Quart Towers), Valencia

Valencia boasts a remarkable collection of towers that form an integral part of the city's architectural heritage. These towers were once vital components of the fortified walls, parapets, and towers that safeguarded the city in bygone eras. Alongside the renowned Torres de Quart, another pair of towers named the "Torres de Serranos" graces the landscape. The name of this famous structure stems from its connection to a road leading to the city of Quart de Poblet. Both the Torres de Quart and the Torres de Serranos have achieved national monument status in Spain.

The Towers of Quart, although slightly younger than their counterparts, were specifically constructed to enhance the city's defense system. Exuding a Gothic style, they bear witness to historical events, including the tumultuous entrance of Napoleon into Valencia, accompanied by heavy bombardment. The scars of French cannon fire during the war of 1808, which engulfed the entire Iberian Peninsula, remain visible to this day. These towers were originally erected in the 15th Century under the guidance of architect Pere Bonfill.

Why You Should Visit:
Quite a few stairs, but the top view is worth the climb.
The tower still can be appreciated even if one chooses not to climb all of the stairs.

Tip:
Entry fee is some €2 and again Sundays and Fiestas free.

Contemporary Architecture Walk

With one foot in the past and the other planted firmly in the future, Valencia manages a balancing act few European cities can pull off. Gothic bell towers, Baroque façades, bustling markets, and centuries-old plazas all share the stage with structures that look as though they were delivered directly from the year 2150. Among the city’s many architectural personalities, contemporary design...  view more

Old Town Walking Tour

Valencia’s Old Town is the sort of place where the Romans, Moors, medieval merchants, Gothic builders, Baroque decorators, and modern shoppers all seem to have comfortably found their place (albeit at different times). Beneath today’s squares, Roman streets and forum remains sit quietly underground, while above them, the city’s Islamic-era street plan still winds and twists, refusing to...  view more

Valencia Introduction Walking Tour

Valencia, Spain’s third-largest city, has been around since 138 BC, when it was founded by the Romans as a colony for battle-tested veterans. Known then as Valentia, which means “valor,” it honored the courage of its first inhabitants. The city was destroyed in 75 BC by Pompey the Great, but was rebuilt within a century, later becoming home to Visigoths and then the Moors, who transformed...  view more
