Turku Castle, Turku

Turku Castle, Turku (must see)

Turku Castle is a medieval castle in Turku. It is the largest surviving medieval building in the country and Finland's most visited museum.

Construction on Turku Castle began around 1280 on the banks of the Aura River. It was intended as a military fortress, though it was used only once in defense when Russian invaders entered Turku in 1318. It mainly served as an administrative headquarters and a home for the royal family. Along with its administrative history, the castle served as a prison for hundreds of years.

Turku Castle has a medieval keep with a square fort and two square gateway towers. A renaissance bailey was added in the 16th century, including the round tower at the castle's southeast corner. Turku Castle has remained unchanged since that expansion.

Some restoration efforts have taken place in the castle over the years. In 1614, a fire virtually destroyed the main structure. In 1941, it was crushed again by a Russian incendiary bomb. The final restoration was completed in 1987.

Turku Castle is now a historical museum with banquet rooms and restaurants used for cultural events. The castle also has a church that holds regular services.

Permanent exhibits in the castle show daily life for royalty, the court, and staff. Partons can see the King's and Queen's Halls, the King's State Room, Sture Church, and the Nun Chapel. They will view religious relics and statues. They will also see wax figures that showcase the historical figures who spent time at Turku Castle.

Turku Castle is open from 10 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Sunday, during the summer. The castle is closed on Mondays from October through early June. Turku Castle also closes for all major holidays.
