Martin's Church, Turku

Martin's Church, Turku

Martin's Church, located in Turku, is the main place of worship for Martin's parish, which was founded in 1921. This striking functionalist church was consecrated on November 12, 1933, to mark the 450th anniversary of Martin Luther's birth. Designed by architects Totti Sora and Gunnar Wahlroos, the church's architectural style emphasizes simplicity and functionality, with three aisles and narrow side aisles leading to a long, barrel-vaulted roof that stands out as one of the building's key features.

Inside, the church is a harmonious blend of art and practicality. The altar, pulpit, and roof reflect architect Totti Sora's thoughtful design, particularly the royal theme symbolized by a crown placed on the pulpit and echoed on the hymn list table. Sculptor Aarre Aaltonen contributed five decorative pieces to the pulpit, further enhancing its artistic value.

The altar wall is home to the church's most significant artwork: a massive "al secco" painting by Einari Wehmas and Karl Ingenius, depicting Jesus Christ on the cross. Measuring 15 meters high and 9.5 meters wide, this piece was the largest of its kind in Scandinavia at the time of its creation. The arches of the nave display symbolic images of the apostles, a green-clothed angel, and the eye of God, while an advent scene graces the organ gallery.

The church’s interior also features the artistry of Greta Skogster, who designed the altar cloth, which was donated by the parish's sewing circle. The cloth prominently features pelicans, a symbol of Christ's love. Other gifts to the church include a seven-branch silver candelabrum created by choir member and silversmith Emil Sivonen.

Despite some early challenges-such as operating without an organ, church bells, or a clock-Martin's Church gradually evolved. A 50-pipe organ was installed in 1936, with electrification following in 1981. The spire clock and chimes were added in the 1950s. The church has undergone several renovations, including significant repairs in 1980–81 and the addition of a war memorial plaque in 1987, honoring the 181 congregation members who died during the wars of 1939–44.
