Ulaanbaatar City Museum, Ulaanbaatar
The Ulaanbaatar City Museum is focused on the development of Mongolia’s capital city. The building itself is over a century old and is a landmark of early 20th-century Mongolian architecture, originally built in 1904 by a Buryat Russian merchant for residential use.
Inside, the museum takes visitors through Ulaanbaatar’s transformation-from a nomadic settlement and seasonal monastic camp to the modern, bustling metropolis it is today. Exhibits include historic maps, black-and-white photographs, architectural plans, models, and documents that show how the city’s shape, functions, and population have evolved.
The museum has been in use since 1956 as an exhibition space devoted to Ulaanbaatar’s history, and in 1960 it was made permanent under its current building and mission. Over time, its name has changed: it was known as the Museum of History and Reconstruction of Ulaanbaatar, and since 2011 it has been formally titled the Ulaanbaatar City Museum.
While the collection is modest, you’ll find silver objects, archaeological remains, many photographs, display boards and models, and archived items such as maps, plans, and drawings. It’s especially good if you want to understand the local past: how the city worked in earlier eras, glimpses into daily life, cultural landmarks, and how Mongolia’s capital responded to modernization pressures.
