Universidad de Deusto (University of Deusto), Bilbao

Founded in 1886 by the Society of Jesus, the University of Deusto in Bilbao stands as the oldest private university in Spain, born from the Basque Country’s aspiration for its own institution of higher learning. Its establishment fused the Jesuits’ educational mission with regional cultural ambitions, positioning it as a foundational pillar for academic and civic life in the area.

The main building, designed by Francisco de Cubas, was the largest structure in Bilbao at the time of its construction. Its grand neoclassical style, featuring stately symmetry and classical motifs, remains a focal point of the cityscape-particularly impressive from across the river.

Over the decades, the university has fostered a reputation for scholastic excellence, especially in fields like law, business, humanities, and social sciences. Notably, it also houses Spain’s first business school, established in 1916, which held the distinction of being the country’s sole provider of business education for nearly half a century.
