Ursulinska Cerkev Svete Trojice (Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity), Ljubljana

The Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Slovenia. Built between 1718 and 1726 for the Ursuline convent, it was designed by the Friulian architect Carlo Martinuzzi. Known as the Ursuline or “Nuns’ Church,” it reflects the order’s long educational role and has a Borromini-inspired façade with curves, colossal columns, and a large gable.

The bright, single-nave interior is decorated with stucco, marble, and finely crafted altars from the early 18th century. The high altar, created by the renowned Baroque sculptor Francesco Robba from richly coloured African marble, is one of the church's artistic highlights. Another notable work is The Stigmatization of St. Francis by the Slovenian Baroque painter Valentin Metzinger. The Holy Trinity Column began as a wooden plague monument in 1693, was rebuilt in stone in 1722, redesigned in 1834, and moved here in 1927.

The church survived the 1895 earthquake, but its belfry suffered severe structural damage and had to be completely demolished and rebuilt. Plečnik arranged the square’s trees to frame the church façade. Local legend also mentions an unproven tunnel to the Franciscan monastery across the river. The church still hosts services and sacred music concerts.
