Drzavni zbor Republike Slovenije (National Assembly Building), Ljubljana

Državni zbor Republike Slovenije (National Assembly Building) is the seat of Slovenia’s 90-member National Assembly and the centre of the country’s parliamentary life. Designed by Slovenian modernist architect Vinko Glanz, it was constructed between 1954 and 1959. Since Slovenia gained independence in 1991, the building has housed debates, votes, and other key functions of the national legislature.

The building reflects post-war Modernism through its balanced proportions, clean lines, and restrained decoration. Its exterior is clad in local Podpeč limestone and Kopriva marble. The most notable feature is the large bronze entrance portal by sculptors Zdenko Kalin and Karel Putrih. Its reliefs depict farmers, workers, scholars, families, and other figures, presenting an allegorical view of Slovenian society and national development.

The building faces Republic Square, an important civic space used for ceremonies, demonstrations, and public gatherings. The square hosted Slovenia’s 1991 declaration of independence. Visitors can view the sculpted portal and façade, while organised tours may be offered when parliament is not in session.
