Uzupis, Vilnius
Užupis is a unique and charming neighborhood located in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. The name Užupis means "beyond the river" or "the other side of the river" in the Lithuanian language, and it refers to the Vilnia River. The district has a bohemian and laissez-faire atmosphere that has attracted many artists over the years. It has been compared to Montmartre in Paris and to Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen due to its artistic vibe. In fact, nearly 1,000 of the district's 7,000 inhabitants are artists.
Užupis is a small neighborhood that covers around 148 acres (60 ha) and is largely located in Vilnius's old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is isolated on three sides, with steep hills on one side, an industrial area built under Soviet rule on the other side, and the Vilnia River separating it from the Old Town.
The district has a rich history, and the Bernardine Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in the city, is located here. Unfortunately, most of the district's Jewish population was killed during the Holocaust, and the old Jewish Cemetery uphill was destroyed by the Soviets. Many abandoned houses were later occupied by marginal elements of society, mainly the homeless, prostitutes, and squatters.
In 1997, the residents of Užupis declared the Republic of Užupis, complete with its own constitution, flag, anthem, and even an unofficial currency. The President of the Republic of Užupis, Romas Lileikis, is a poet, musician, and film director. The Republic's army of approximately 11 men has since been retired. Užupis Day, which falls on April 1 (April Fools' Day), is celebrated annually by the residents of the self-declared republic.
Despite its independent status, Užupis does not house internet cafes, markets, shopping malls, or governmental institutions (except Užupian), and there is no embassy to Lithuania. Artistic endeavors are the main preoccupation of the Republic.
It is unclear whether the statehood of the Republic is intended to be serious, tongue-in-cheek, or a combination of both. However, the decision to place Užupis Day on April Fools' Day emphasizes the importance of humor over "serious" political decisions. The flag of the Republic features the palm of a hand on a white background, with the color of the palm emblem changing seasonally in the sequence blue (Winter), green (Spring), yellow (Summer), and red (Autumn).
