Wat Chayamangkalaram (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), George Town
The Temple of the Reclining Buddha is your classic Thai temple, standing out from the Malay Chinese Buddhist ones with its sharp-roofed design and bell-shaped pillars. Inside, you'll find a massive 33-meter-long reclining Buddha decked out in a golden saffron robe, along with colorful statues of Yakshas and other mythical creatures.
This Buddha isn't just for show – it also doubles as a columbarium, housing urns of the departed. Plus, there are smaller Buddha statues scattered around, especially in the main prayer hall.
Located across from the Dhammikarama Burmese Temple, about 2.5 kilometers northwest of central George Town, it's the oldest Siamese temple in the state. Legend has it Queen Victoria coughed up the land for it back in 1845, and even after two centuries, it's still a hotspot for both local worshippers and tourists alike.
