Water Puppet Theater, Hanoi

The Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi is dedicated to preserving the ancient Vietnamese art of water puppetry, a tradition that originated in the villages of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam. Historically, performances were staged in flooded rice paddies and ponds, with the water serving as a natural stage. Today, water puppetry is one of Vietnam’s best-known traditional art forms, with Vietnamese troupes performing at cultural festivals around the world.

During a performance, brightly coloured lacquered wooden puppets appear to glide across a shallow pool of water, controlled by puppeteers using long poles and mechanisms concealed beneath the surface. Some scenes portray everyday life in traditional Vietnamese villages, while others bring ancient legends and myths to life. The combination of colourful puppets, lighting and water effects creates a distinctive theatrical experience.

The performance is accompanied by musicians playing traditional Vietnamese instruments, including drums, bamboo flutes and the dan bau, a single-stringed zither. Songs and narration are performed in Vietnamese, but the expressive movements of the puppets make the stories enjoyable even for visitors who do not understand the language. Popular scenes include the Dance of the Fairies, Dance of the Dragons and Legend of the Restored Sword.

Performances generally last around 50 minutes, making the theatre an easy addition to a sightseeing itinerary around Hoan Kiem Lake. Photography is usually permitted, while multilingual audio guides may be available to help international visitors follow the stories and understand their cultural significance.
