Hàng Gai Street, Hanoi

Set on the edge of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem Lake, Hang Gai Street is one of the capital’s busiest commercial destinations and is particularly renowned for its silk shops. Stretching for around 300 metres, the street is lined with numerous stores selling silk, clothing and related products.

During the Le Dynasty, Hang Gai formed the middle section of a road connecting the banks of the Nhi Ha River with the southern gate of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel. At the time, the street was associated with the sale of ropes and hammocks. Its name reflects this history, as the Vietnamese word gai refers to hemp, a fibre traditionally used to make such products.

Today, Hang Gai is particularly known for its quality silk and tailoring. Among its best-known establishments are Le Minh Silk and Tan My Design, where visitors can browse fabrics, clothing and other textile products. Some tailors can produce garments within a remarkably short time, although allowing extra time for fittings is advisable if you want something made to measure.

Many shops accept card payments, although carrying some cash can still be useful. Bargaining may be possible in certain smaller shops, but prices at established boutiques are generally more fixed. When purchasing silk, choosing a reputable retailer can also help ensure the quality and authenticity of the material.

Beyond silk boutiques and tailor shops, Hang Gai Street offers numerous souvenir stores, handicraft shops and art galleries, making it an excellent place to browse for gifts while exploring the Old Quarter.
