Whitehern Museum, Hamilton

Whitehern Museum, Hamilton (must see)

Whitehern Historic House and Garden presents over 100 years of family history within a single home. The house was built in 1848, and in 1852 the McQuesten family moved in and renamed it “Whitehern.” It remained their residence for three generations. Rather than restoring it to one specific era, the museum keeps the rooms as they evolved, showing Victorian design alongside early 20th-century changes. This layered approach helps visitors see how tastes, technology, and daily routines gradually shifted over time.

Isaac Buchanan McQuesten worked as a lawyer and was active in community affairs. When he died in 1888, the family faced serious financial difficulties. His wife, Mary Baker McQuesten, was left to manage significant debt while raising their six children. Her letters and household records reveal the practical challenges of maintaining the property. The final generation of McQuestens at the house consisted of those six children, none of whom ever married, and they continued living there well into the 20th century.

One of those children, Thomas McQuesten, later became an important political figure in Ontario. In the early 1900s, he supported highway development and the expansion of public parks, shaping infrastructure that still serves residents today.

Inside the house, more than 10,000 original objects remain in place, including furniture, clothing, books, photographs, and personal papers that show daily life and education. The digital archive alone holds about 4,000 letters, documents, and images. Early electrical lighting and indoor plumbing mark the shift to modern living. The garden is also central to the visit, redesigned under Thomas McQuesten by the landscape firm Dunington-Grubb, with a layout and plantings that reflect early 20th-century design still visible today.
