Wisconsin Cheese Mart, Milwaukee

Wisconsin Cheese Mart, Milwaukee

Founded in 1938 in Milwaukee’s downtown Metropolitan Block, the Wisconsin Cheese Mart began as a small shop with a big mission: to deliver the highest-quality cheeses from local creameries to the hands (and plates) of cheese lovers across the city. Over 70 years later, that mission remains unchanged-but the reach has grown dramatically.

After a devastating fire in the 1970s destroyed its original home, the Cheese Mart found a new base just a few steps north in the historic Steinmeyer Building, where its flagship store still thrives today. The original 1938 sign hangs proudly, a reminder of the shop’s deep roots and resilience.

Now a family-owned business with a national presence, the Wisconsin Cheese Mart offers more than 150 varieties of Wisconsin cheese, spotlighting the work of over 30 local creameries. From classic cheddars to bold, innovative spreads, the store showcases the full spectrum of Wisconsin’s dairy artistry. Strategic partnerships with acclaimed producers like Pine River Pre-Pack and Carr Valley Cheese have further cemented its role as a trusted gateway to award-winning cheese, now shipped to all 50 states.

Today, Wisconsin Cheese Mart is not only a retail destination but a celebration of Wisconsin’s dairy heritage. It champions small-scale producers, curates artisan offerings, and connects generations of cheesemakers to customers nationwide-remaining a proud and flavorful ambassador for the Dairy State.
