Zwicker's Gallery, Halifax
Founded in 1886, Zwicker’s Gallery has been a cornerstone of Halifax’s art scene for over a century. Established by Judson Zwicker, the gallery initially catered to the officers of the British garrison and their families, as Halifax was then home to the second-largest military garrison in the British Empire. Over the years, Zwicker’s evolved from a meeting place for local artists into a well-respected institution, playing a vital role in the city’s artistic and cultural landscape.
Throughout its history, the gallery has adapted to meet the changing artistic and commercial needs of the community. After being managed for 51 years by its founder, the gallery was taken over in 1957 by Leroy Zwicker and his wife Marguerite. In 1970, Ian and Anne Muncaster assumed ownership, further developing Zwicker’s reputation as a premier art gallery on Canada’s East Coast.
Today, Zwicker’s Gallery offers an extensive collection of paintings, graphics, and sculptures from local, national, and international artists. A key highlight is its selection of antique maps, charts, and historical prints of Canada. The gallery also takes pride in showcasing the works of Inuit and Aboriginal artists, presenting an array of paintings, graphics, artifacts, and sculptures that reflect Canada’s diverse artistic heritage.
In the early years, Zwicker’s was one of the few artistic hubs in Halifax, serving as a gathering space for local artists who organized painting trips and exhibitions. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Halifax saw the rise of public galleries with professional curatorial services, including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, which provided a permanent venue for local, national, and international exhibitions.
With its long-standing commitment to the arts, Zwicker’s Gallery remains a pillar of Halifax’s cultural identity, bridging the past with the present through its dedication to quality art and professional service.

Halifax Introduction Walking Tour
Halifax is located on the ancestral lands of the Mi'kmaq who lived in the area long before Europeans arrived. Mi'kmaq called the area "Great Harbor". The city itself was established by the British in 1749 in violation of treaties with the Mi'kmaq. The establishment of the city led to Father le Loutre's War, otherwise known as the Anglo-Micmac War.
