A Lovely Day Trip to Amersfoort from Utrecht by Train, Amersfoort, Netherlands

Amersfoort is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for an easy day trip from Utrecht. Just 15 minutes away by train, this picturesque city offers medieval streets, scenic canals, and a fascinating history—all without the crowds of bigger Dutch towns.

I took a day trip to Amersfoort from Utrecht where I was house sitting for a lovely cat and found it a lovely place to wander, soak up the history, and enjoy a relaxed pace. It was another of those “ooh, I could live here” towns, of which I have so many.

The train from Utrecht Centraal to Amersfoort Centraal only takes 15 minutes, with frequent departures throughout the day. To buy a ticket, simply tap your contactless card at the barriers at the station, and you’re good to go.

Once you arrive, it’s about a 15-minute walk from the station to the historic centre. Turn left as you leave the station and follow these signs on the pavement to the old town.

Start your visit at Koppelpoort, Amersfoort’s fancy medieval gate that once protected the city. It’s a combination land and water gate and is one of the best-preserved gates in the Netherlands.
