Three days in Thessaloniki - ultimate city guide, Thessaloniki, Greece
Having lived in Thessaloniki for a year gave me an unique view on this beautiful city. And also the opportunity to do the same sightseeing tour at least a dozen times. Yet I never really shared my favorite places with you. Maybe because this feels very touristy and I’ve never felt like a tourist in this place. But last may we actually went back to Greece and visited not just my favorite beach but also city - Thessaloniki. And of course we had to see our favorite spots. So let me take you along.
To be fair before I moved here to study, Greece only meant Athens and the islands. (Very ignorant of me.) But it was also good because I didn’t have any expectations - so of course Thessaloniki exceeded them. So, what would I do if I’d come her for the first time for the weekend?
Flights are relatively easy to get especially from Düsseldorf (or Cologne if you’re lucky) and I think they are often around 200-300€ all together. (If you live close to Düsseldorf you could try the Weeze airport which is small af and in the middle of nowhere, but they often offer cheap flights to the greek city.) Most of them are with Eurowings, Ryanair or (my current favorite) Aegean Airlines. They are the biggest greek national airline and I LOVE them. First of all, you get greated with “Kalimera” instead of “Guten Morgen”, which is always a plus. But they are also always so kind and have great service - you even get free drinks and snacks in the air! Plus, when you book economy light with them you get to choose between a personal item or a carry-on which is so nice! Because who would choose a laptop bag instead of a small suitcase? (Plus I have to admit I’ve brought both before and nobody ever said anything. But they do check so be prepared to have to stuff you personal item into the carry-on. Oh and they do weight checks sometimes but I’ve only seen it once.) Hands down my favorite airline to travel to and around Greece. ......
