Above Bar Street, Southampton
Above Bar Street is one of Southampton’s main shopping streets, stretching north from the medieval Bargate. Its name comes from its position “above” the old town gate, which once marked the northern entrance to Southampton. As the town expanded beyond its medieval walls, Above Bar Street developed into a busy commercial area, becoming the city’s main business district by the mid-19th century.
Heading north from Bargate, continue along the street until you reach Guildhall Square on your left. This spacious public square is a popular gathering place, hosting festivals, performances, and community events. Look across the square to see Southampton Guildhall, part of the city's Civic Centre complex, with its impressive stone façade.
Now, turn your gaze to the opposite side of the street, where you will find Palmerston Park. Follow its tree-lined paths and look for the statue of Lord Palmerston, a former British Prime Minister, near the park's northern end. Farther inside, you'll also discover a traditional bandstand surrounded by lawns and seasonal flowers.
Continuing north along Above Bar Street, you will reach two more parks facing each other across the road. On your left is Watts Park, also known as West Park. Near its eastern entrance stands the Southampton Cenotaph, a stone memorial designed to commemorate those who died in the First World War. Farther inside the park, look for the statue of Isaac Watts, the Southampton-born hymn writer and philosopher after whom the park is named.
Finally, turn toward the opposite side of Above Bar Street to see East Park. Its winding paths, mature trees, and open lawns make it a pleasant place for a stroll. Follow the central pathway to find the statue of Richard Andrews, a former mayor of Southampton. Near the park's northern end, you can also see the Titanic Engineers' Memorial, dedicated to the engineers who died when the famous ocean liner sank in 1912.
Together, these parks offer a peaceful contrast to the busy shopping lane.
