Abu El-Hagag Mosque, Luxor

Abu El-Hagag Mosque is one of Egypt’s most unusual religious monuments because it stands above part of ancient Luxor Temple. It is dedicated to Sheikh Yusuf Abu El-Hagag, a 13th-century scholar and spiritual figure. The site has been used for worship for thousands of years, passing through ancient Egyptian, Roman, Christian, and Islamic phases.

The mosque’s architecture combines traditional Islamic features with its ancient setting. Visitors can see white walls, arches, prayer spaces, and minarets rising above sandstone temple remains. Some older columns were covered with plaster and mortar, which helped preserve ancient carvings beneath the surface. In places, exposed stonework reveals how the mosque was built into earlier sacred structures.

Abu El-Hagag Mosque remains an active place of worship and a center of local religious life. It contains the tomb of Sheikh Yusuf Abu El-Hagag and is linked to an annual festival with processions and a ceremonial boat tradition connected to older Egyptian rituals. During 19th-century temple excavations, the mosque was preserved while many surrounding structures were removed.
