Habiba Gallery, Luxor

Habiba Gallery is a cultural handicraft center near the exit area of Luxor Temple, making it a convenient stop after visiting the ancient monuments. Unlike many market stalls, it uses fixed prices, so visitors can browse without haggling or heavy sales pressure. The gallery is associated with Linda Wheeler, an Australian founder and curator who has worked with rural craft communities across Egypt.

The gallery is known for handmade pottery, textiles, embroidery, baskets, jewelry, woodwork, and decorative pieces. One highlight is Garagos pottery, made from Nile silt and often finished with blue, turquoise, yellow, or speckled glazes. Its style reflects a mix of village life, Coptic traditions, and ancient Egyptian motifs, including birds, palms, camels, Ankh symbols, and Nativity figures.

Many textiles come from Akhmim, a weaving center known since ancient and Coptic times for hand-loom work. Cotton towels, scarves, and table linens help preserve skills passed through families and protect them from factory-made alternatives. Through its fair-trade approach, Habiba Gallery connects travelers with living Egyptian craft traditions while supporting the artisans who make them.
