Alexandria Aquarium, Alexandria

Alexandria Aquarium, Alexandria

The Alexandria Aquarium offers a compact introduction to marine life from Egypt and nearby waters. Established in 1930, it operates under the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries and combines the atmosphere of an older public museum with the educational role of a research institution. Its stone walls, enclosed halls, and subdued lighting give parts of the visit a vintage, almost submarine-like character.

Inside, visitors find 32 glass water basins containing fish and other aquatic species from the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and freshwater environments such as the Nile. Some displays also include non-local species, including rare freshwater fish from the Amazon River, adding a wider geographical range to the collection.

The museum section adds preserved specimens, shells, corals, fossils, marine models, and taxidermy displays of regional waterfowl, including seagulls and flamingos. One of the most memorable sights is the large whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling, a long-standing feature that gives the museum a strong visual focus.
